Proper plant spacing is significant in landscaping primarily because it reduces competition for nutrients, light, and water among plants. When plants are spaced appropriately, each one has better access to essential resources necessary for healthy growth, such as sunlight, water, and soil nutrients. This optimal spacing helps ensure that plants develop strong root systems and grow robustly without being stunted by the presence of neighboring plants competing for the same resources.

In contrast, overcrowding, which can occur when plants are too closely planted, often leads to issues such as poor air circulation, increased disease susceptibility, and limited growth potential. While aesthetic symmetry can enhance the overall design and appearance of a landscape, it should not take priority over the health and well-being of the plants. Additionally, increasing soil erosion is not a desired effect of proper plant spacing and is generally associated with insufficient vegetation cover. Therefore, maintaining proper spacing is crucial not only for aesthetic considerations but, more importantly, for promoting the long-term vitality of the landscape.
